David Davis resigns to trigger byelection on 42 days
The shadow home secretary, David Davis, today dramatically and unexpectedly announced that is to resign as an MP.
He is standing down over the issue of increasing the detention limit to 42 days.
Davis made a statement outside the House of Commons at 1pm - His main argument is he is against the Government's slow strangulation of peoples' freedoms"
A spokeswoman for David Cameron insisted there was "absolutely no rift" between the two men.
"David Cameron thinks it is a courageous decision," the spokeswoman said.
It is thought he wants to trigger a byelection in his Haltemprice and Howden constituency in Yorkshire.
The shadow home secretary was passionate in his opposition to the government's plans to extend the period of time terror suspects can be detained without charge from 28 to 42 days.
It is thought he had threatened to resign if his party did not hold firm on the issue.
